Surround Care 2018 -2019

WELCOME TO
CRESTWOOD ELEMENTARY
SURROUND CARE PROGRAM

Dear Crestwood families,

Welcome to the Crestwood Elementary Surround Care Program. This program is initiated under the guidance of the Crestwood Local School Board. Our goal is to provide dependable and economical child care for working parents, a pleasant informal atmosphere where children feel safe and accepted, and a setting where positive attitudes are stressed for children in grades PreK through 6.

This year we will be in a classroom, RM 125 in the first hallway next to pupil services. We will have the buzzer installed, like you have used at the other end of the building. Our program is a self-supporting one, which means program fees are used to cover all costs. Keep in mind that each A.M. and P.M. Surround Care session must sell enough hours to meet the financial needs of the program. The number of staff is based according to the number of children and hours sold. It is with these expenses in mind that program fees are set.

Thank you for using the Crestwood Elementary Surround Care Program. We are happy to be of service to our Crestwood community. Please read the remainder of the information contained in this handbook to familiarize yourself with other aspects of our program.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Ule,
Surround Care Director

INFLUENZA (FLU)

What is the Flu?

The flu is an illness caused by flu viruses. The flu may make people cough and have a sore throat and fever. They may also have a runny or stuffy nose, feel tired, have body aches, or show other signs they are not well. The flu happens every year and is more common in the fall and winter. People of all ages can get the flu, from babies and young adults to the elderly.

How does the flu spread?

People who have the flu can spread the virus by coughing or sneezing. Droplets released when a sick person coughs, sneezes, or talks can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. The droplets can also be inhaled into the lungs. People may also catch the flu by touching their mouth or nose after touching something with the virus on it, such as doorknobs, tables or an infected person’s dirty hand.

How long can a person with the flu spread the virus to other people?
Most people may be able to spread the flu from 1 day before showing symptoms to 5-7 days after symptoms begin. Severely sick people or young children may be able to spread the flu longer.

If you are worried that your child or family member is showing symptoms of flu, please take them to the doctor. If you need help finding a doctor, your school health nurse can advise you.

Superintendent Community Announcement for 9-8-17

Response by Jill Rowe Treasurer to a Recent Mailing in the District in Regards to School Finance and the Bond Issue Facts

Statement #1 – Did you know that the figures are on top of what you are currently paying.  While this statement is true.  The elementary buildings will be paid off in 2022 and your taxes will go down due to these buildings being paid off.

Statement #2 – Did you know your property taxes will go up due to reevaluation.  This statement is untrue.  Yes there is a reevaluation in 2018, however in the late 1970’s HB920 was passed.  This bill stated that voted millage cannot increase due to inflationary increases.  So as property is reevaluated the school district does not see an increase if the property values are increased.  The school district only sees an increase on 5.2 mills if property values are increased.  The remaining millage the school district receives does not increase.  The Ohio Department of Taxation rolls the millage back so the district does not see any increases.  For example the Permanent Improvement levy was passed in 1987 at 3.5 mills and the District collected around $420,000 on that levy.  Today the District still collects $420,000 on that levy.  Even though property rates have increased since 1987 the District is still collecting the same amount as when it was passed due to the HB920 law.

Crestwood Bond Issue May 2, 2017

Crestwood High School is nearly 60 years old and is not conducive for learning and teaching in the 21st century.  The building is inefficient to operate, is poorly organized, lacks modern security features, and is not easily handicapped accessible. Crestwood Middle School is newer but does not provide the greatest educational opportunities our students need for their futures.

Crestwood Schools gathered input from the community and worked with experts and the State of Ohio to create a plan for our future.   This bond issue would replace our aging High School and Middle School.

If the issue passes, the State of Ohio will pay for nearly 30% of the cost of the new school.  If we don’t pass, the funds will go to another community.

The issue means a new High School, on the existing site, with a 7-8 grade wing and a separate 9-12 grade wing.  It will also means two gymnasiums and an auditorium.

The new high school will be built using local construction service companies when possible, meaning our local tax dollars will stay in our community.

Renewal – Permanent Improvement Levy – November 2016 – No New Taxes

In 1987, the Crestwood Local School District residents approved a 3.5-    mill permanent improvement levy. Proceeds from this levy can be used to purchase or repair those items in the school district that have a long term useful life.  Typically a five (5) year useful life or more is utilized when determining the use of these funds.  The money from a permanent improvement levy can be used to purchase school busses, school building equipment such as boilers, furnaces, hot water heaters, water fountains, light fixtures, technology, athletic equipment and band equipment, etc.  It can be used to replace or repair school roofs, cracked sidewalks, windows, as well as for the purchase of new textbooks, desks and instructional equipment.

We’re listening: new parent education video stresses reading in the third grade

10/20/2015

Under Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee, a student’s third grade year can be the most pivotal. Yet schools tell us that parents of struggling readers often don’t realize that. The Ohio Department of Education now offers a video that schools can use to help families understand the critical importance of monitoring their struggling readers’ progress in third grade. The video also suggests how family members can support a child’s reading at home. Download the 30-second video for parent-teacher conferences as well as posting on your district website.

Socktober at CPS

Every night in the United States an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. This October,

SoulPancake and Kid President want 2 million people to prove that even the smallest acts of love, like donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.”

- If you are able and willing, please send your child to school with a NEW pair of socks any day this October.

-They will then add their sock contribution to a Sock Box which will be kept in their classroom.

- Every Friday I will collect a count of each classroom’s socks and do an announcement over the PA

-At the end of October we will be donating all of the socks we raise to a local shelter.

-This is a wonderful way to show our students at CPS one of the traits of a good citizen: To help people in our community!

-Here is the link to the Socktober website which gives you more information about Socktober including some videos of schools that have done this in the past: http://soulpancake.com/socktober/

-Any questions can be emailed to your child’s teacher

for which class has raised the most socks by the end of that week.

CPS Students Experience Dancing Wheels Performance

All 428 CPS students in grades PK-2 experienced an amazing performance at St. Ignatius’ Breen Center for the Performing Arts in Ohio City.  The performance Babes in Toyland featured a variety of performances from ballet to modern dance.  The Dancing Wheels Integrated Dance Company features dancers who are in wheelchairs and those who are not in wheelchairs. The school was able to attend the performance was made possible by a Hiram Community Trust grant awarded to Eileen Kelly, Monica Grebb and Stacy Turner, as well as, funding by an anonymous donor, the CPS PTO and the CPS Principal’s Account.

CPS Winter Holiday Music Program Rocks!

The 2nd graders at Crestwood Primary School put on quite a show this year.  The students along with Mrs. Gilles and accompanist Pat Strainer, danced and sang the night away to many holiday favorites such as Oh Christmas Tree, You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch and Carol of the Bells. Mrs. Gilles does an amazing job of including everyone student in the performance with a special part.  The audience was entertained from start to finish!

CPS PTO Zoo Club

The CPS PTO is once again providing the Zoo Club Program for students once a month.  The Akron Zoo visits CPS once a month to educate students about different animals.  The Akron Zoo brings along many animal friends such as rabbits, turtles and ducks to name a few.  Students are able to touch the animals and last month students were able to feed the ducks right out of their hands.  Mrs. Nicole Santin is in charge of Zoo Club and along with her volunteers she provides a snack and an amazing time for our students.

2014 CPS Walk-A-Thon

Thank you for an amazing CPS Walk-A-Thon! The kids had a blast walking the path, dancing with Mr. Pruszynski at the water station, hula hoops and jump ropes, enjoying a snack of water and apples, tracking our steps and dancing at recess! We are so grateful to our many sponsors and all of our CPS families who donated.  We were able to raise approximately $6,000.00! Thank you to our volunteers for helping out that day!

2014 Pinwheels for Peace Celebration

Our 2014 Pinwheels for Peace Celebration was wonderful!  As we shared our messages of peace and unity, we enjoyed music from the CIS choir, as well as, messages from Mr. Traveny. Mrs. Gerbrick and Mrs. Ducca.  The students enjoyed the songs of peace as they held up their pinwheels and watched them spin in the wind.  After the ceremony, the students placed the pinwheels around the outside of the building as our symbol and committment for peace.

CPS Teams Up with Hiram College for After School Reading Program

Calamity Days Calamity Days

The Crestwood Local School District currently has to make up four calamity days. The Crestwood Board of Education, last evening, passed a resolution to utilize Blizzard Bags to help offset school days missed this past winter.  Blizzard Bags are an option provided by the Ohio Department of Education for school districts to help make up as many as three instructional days during a school year. With the use of Blizzard Bags, the Crestwood Local Schools will only have to make up one day at the end of this school year.

Blizzard Bags are online or take-home lessons that students complete to make up a missed day of school. Assignments will be available online on our individual schools’ websites or as “take home” hard copy assignments for your child to complete beginning Monday, April 14.  Assignments are due two weeks after they are assigned.  For example, the first assignments will be due two weeks from Monday, April 14 which is Friday, April 25.   The second assignments will be assigned Monday, April 28 and will be due Friday, May 9.  The third assignments will be assigned Monday, May 12 and will be due Friday, May 23.

If you have questions, please contact your child’s teacher or the Principal of your child’s school. We hope that the use of Blizzard Bags will be beneficial to your child’s education and success.

Since one additional day must be added at the end of the year, the last day of school for Crestwood students will now be June 6, 2014.

Dear Parents,

Crestwood Local Schools is fully committed to curbing student bullying and school violence, and providing a positive learning environment for all students that enhances personal safety and promotes respect, dignity, and equality among students.  We believe our schools play an important role in helping faculty, staff and parents prepare students to be respectful and responsible citizens.  As part of our commitment, the district is initiating a new, integrated program, developed by former school officials, that provides:

  • Online and telephone reporting tools for students, parents and staff.
  • Student training regarding the need to speak up about safety and bullying issues.
  • Staff training in recognizing and responding to incidents of bullying and violence.
  • Administrative systems to manage incidents and document district and school response to reported concerns of bullying or violence.

Crestwood Local Schools will make every effort to handle and respond to every charge and complaint filed by students, parents and employees in a fair, thorough, and just manner.  Also, every effort will be made to protect the due process rights of all victims and all alleged perpetrators.

New Student/Parent Hotline!

Students, who believe they have been harassed, bullied, victimized by fellow students, or have other concerns which may jeopardize the safety of students, employees or school facilities, are asked to Speak Up! and promptly report the issue using our district’s new student/parent Hotline – accessible both online and by telephone.

The New Common Core Standards

The New Common Core Standards will be implemented this upcoming 2013-2014 school year and are more rigorous.  This three minute video explains the change.  You can help us as parents by trying to schedule appointments and vacations during non-school hours as to not disrupt the educational time we have with your children. Together we will work to give your child the best educational opportunity.  Your help is greatly appreciated!

Project Giving Tree helps provide gifts for families in our community who need some extra help around the holidays. This year we had over 85 tags taken from our tree. We were able to help over 10 families this holiday season!
We could not have done this without the help of all of those who took tags off the tree and bought gifts. We want to thank everyone who helped brighten the holidays for a number of our families and students! We appreciate your kindness, generosity and support!
