Second Quarter Interims, Fee Statements, Giving Tree, Thanksgiving Break

Good evening. This is Julie Schmidt, Principal of Crestwood Middle School calling with some important reminders for our CMS families.

First, I am calling to remind everyone that tomorrow, Tuesday, November 25th, marks the halfway point of our second grading period which means Interim Grade Reports will be coming home with your child.  All Crestwood Middle School students will be receiving their interim grade reports in their homerooms.  Attached to the interims you will find fee statements for those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to pay your child’s fees. Please watch for these important papers to come home tomorrow.

Also, our Annual CMS Giving Tree has been set up in the front atrium of our building.  If you would like to help make the holidays a little brighter for some families in our school, please stop by, pull a tag from the tree, and donate a gift.

I am also calling to remind our families that tomorrow is the last day of school before the Thanksgiving Holiday. There is no school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, November 26-28th.  Classes will resume on Monday, December 1st.

The written transcript of this message can also be found on the Crestwood Middle School web-page and the CMS Facebook page for your reference.

I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you and have a great evening.

We are currently taking referrals for holiday help.  If you are in need or would like to refer a family, please contact Lynne Morrison at 330-357-8204, ext. 2009 or lmorrison@crestwoodschools.org.

CEA Summer Camp Scholarship

Did you see the teachers working a booth at the Potato Festival?  They did, and this year they raised record worthy funds!  With that money, Crestwood Education Association is offering Summer Camp scholarships to Crestwood Middle school students.  Any student interested in attending a summer camp is encouraged to submit an application for the scholarship.  CEA realizes that there are many wonderful opportunities for summer camps available to middle school age students, yet the cost can sometimes make it difficult for families to send their children.  CEA wants to help.  Through CEA fundraising efforts, four $100.00 scholarships have been made available.  Application for all types of camps will be considered.

To apply, simply fill out the application - click here.  Return the completed application to Kim Marfy at Crestwood Middle School in a sealed envelope by May 1, 2015. Applications can also be picked up at the Middle School office.

Cleveland Indian’s outfielder Michael Brantley visited Crestwood Middle School to present the school with a $5000.00 grant from Game Plan for Success.  To enter the contest, schools had to submit a 500-word essay on what their game plan for student success will be for the year.  Mrs. Schmidt submitted and essay about the Crestwood Intensive Care Unit and how our students are learning heros.  CICU is a program for teachers, students and families to work together to ensure that all the needs of the student are met and every assignment is completed.

Internet Safety Internet Safety
  • Is your 11-18 year old using Ask.fm or SnapChat?  Do you even know what these platforms are meant to do? (Spoiler alert:  neither one of these apps should exist anywhere in your home)
  • Are you aware that the overwhelming percentage of children are regular consumers of online pornography? And by the way, they don't think it's a big deal.
  • Did you know that your tweens and teens are regularly making it incredibly easy for sexual predators and "cyberbullies" to stalk them?
  • Did you know that if your child has an Instagram account - chances are they have more than ONE account?
  • Did you know that sexting is beginning in the 4th & 5th grade?
  • Did you know that chances are that your child has been the cyberbully at least a couple of times?

If any of these surprised you, come and learn more at the Internet Safety for Parents presentation.  See attached flyer.

Safety Notice

August 24, 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian(s),

One of our most important jobs as educators is to provide a safe and secure learning atmosphere for your children.  In an attempt to ensure that our environment is drug free, we work with the Mantua Police Department and our School Resource Officer to schedule random searches of our building and grounds with drug dogs.

This morning, while our middle school students were working inside their classrooms, our School Resource Officer, Sergeant Joe Urso and our drug dog, Diablo, searched the building.  As a result, we are pleased to report that our building is drug free.  We have shared with the staff and students what occurred today.  We will be having additional unannounced searches throughout the rest of the school year.

Educating your child in a safe environment is our top priority.  We would like to thank our School Resource Officer, Joe Urso, and his police dog, Diablo, for their assistance.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have at jschmidt@crestwoodschools.com, or at 330-357-8204.

Our faculty and staff look forward to continuing to work to help keep your children safe and secure during school hours.

Sincerely,

Julie Schmidt, Principal

Crestwood Bond Issue Talking Points

Crestwood Bond Issue Talking Points

Crestwood High School is nearly 60 years old and was not built for learning and teaching in the 21st century.  The building is inefficient to operate, is poorly organized, and is not handicapped accessible. Crestwood Middle School is newer but does not provide the latest educational opportunities our students need for their futures.

Crestwood Schools gathered input from the community and worked with experts and the State of Ohio to create a plan for our future.   This bond issue would replace our aging High School and Middle School.

If the issue passes, the State of Ohio will pay for nearly 30% of the cost of the new school.  If we don’t pass, the funds will go to another community.

The issue means a new High School, on the existing site, with a 7-8 grade wing and a separate 9-12 grade wing.  It will also mean two gymnasiums and an auditorium.

The new high school will be built using local construction service companies when possible, meaning our local tax dollars will stay in our community.

ALICE Drill

Good Morning CMS Families,

Today, during the school day at 8:05 a.m., Crestwood Middle School faculty, staff, and students practiced our A.L.I.C.E. Lock-Down/Evacuation procedures.  This lock-down drill was unannounced to staff and students.  Students and teachers did an excellent job of getting safely inside the classrooms and barricading the doors. The entire building was safely locked down in under one minute. Teachers and students then practiced evacuating the building. This also went very well, as students and staff exited the building very quickly and quietly.

Today’s lock-down drill was conducted with the assistance of our School Resource Officer, Sgt. Joe Urso and Mantua Police Chief Harry Buchert.  All students and staff have been trained on what actions to take during a lock-down/evacuation.  We appreciate the support and assistance of local law enforcement and the Crestwood Local School District Administration.

Educating your child in a safe environment is our highest priority.  If you should have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me at (330) 357-8204.  Thank you.

Sincerely,

Julie Schmidt

Response by Jill Rowe Treasurer to a Recent Mailing in the District in Regards to School Finance and the Bond Issue Facts

Statement #1 – Did you know that the figures are on top of what you are currently paying.  While this statement is true.  The elementary buildings will be paid off in 2022 and your taxes will go down due to these buildings being paid off.

Statement #2 – Did you know your property taxes will go up due to reevaluation.  This statement is untrue.  Yes there is a reevaluation in 2018, however in the late 1970’s HB920 was passed.  This bill stated that voted millage cannot increase due to inflationary increases.  So as property is reevaluated the school district does not see an increase if the property values are increased.  The school district only sees an increase on 5.2 mills if property values are increased.  The remaining millage the school district receives does not increase.  The Ohio Department of Taxation rolls the millage back so the district does not see any increases.  For example the Permanent Improvement levy was passed in 1987 at 3.5 mills and the District collected around $420,000 on that levy.  Today the District still collects $420,000 on that levy.  Even though property rates have increased since 1987 the District is still collecting the same amount as when it was passed due to the HB920 law.

Crestwood Community Pep Rally August 20, 2017 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the High School (pep rally will start at 7pm)

CRESTWOOD BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING MOVED TO PRIMARY SCHOOL CAFETERIA School Board Meeting

Board Meeting Scheduled for Tuesday, December 12th at 7:00 PM at CPS Cafeteria

Board Meeting Agenda

INFLUENZA (FLU)

What is the Flu?

The flu is an illness caused by flu viruses. The flu may make people cough and have a sore throat and fever. They may also have a runny or stuffy nose, feel tired, have body aches, or show other signs they are not well. The flu happens every year and is more common in the fall and winter. People of all ages can get the flu, from babies and young adults to the elderly.

How does the flu spread?

People who have the flu can spread the virus by coughing or sneezing. Droplets released when a sick person coughs, sneezes, or talks can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. The droplets can also be inhaled into the lungs. People may also catch the flu by touching their mouth or nose after touching something with the virus on it, such as doorknobs, tables or an infected person’s dirty hand.

How long can a person with the flu spread the virus to other people?
Most people may be able to spread the flu from 1 day before showing symptoms to 5-7 days after symptoms begin. Severely sick people or young children may be able to spread the flu longer.

If you are worried that your child or family member is showing symptoms of flu, please take them to the doctor. If you need help finding a doctor, your school health nurse can advise you.

Let your voice be heard at the National Writing Project Youth Writing Camp at Kent State University this summer! Activities will be led by Mrs. Anfang, along with four other certified National Writing Project (NWP) teacher consultants.  Students entering grades 4-9 are invited to join us on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at Kent State University’s White Hall from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.  A journal, T-shirt, goodie bag, snacks, and lunch are included with the $40 fee.  The camp offers two tracks:  Creative Composers (for students entering grades 4-6) can join in a fun-filled array of activities to encourage expression in a variety of media.  Powerful Voices (for students entering grades 7-9) where students can savor the freedom to write in a variety of media as they view Kent State University's scenic and historic campus through the lens of creative writing.

Registration and payment are due June 13, 2018.  Scholarships may be available.  The Crestwood Education Association (CEA) offers Summer Camp Scholarships through an application process. To inquire about the camp or possible NWP scholarships, please email writingcampksu@yahoo.com.
