Welcome Back!

Welcome Back

Dear Parents, Students, Guardians, and Community Members:

Welcome back everyone to the 2017-18 school year.   As always it has been a busy, productive summer.  Our building custodians have been doing a great job of making sure our school buildings are shiny and clean and ready for our students and staff to return. Our transportation staff have our busses ready to roll.  Our maintenance staff have been busy as well, making sure our grounds are kept and our school buildings maintained.   We have installed 10 new security cameras throughout the school district, repaired playground equipment, painted hallways, and are creating an expanded engineering lab at the middle school.  Here is a complete list of our summer maintenance projects that are completed or will be completed https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8WfQthuNdtgYUM0YUxJRjN4WjA/view?usp=sharing.

You can find other recent maintenance projects that have been completed in the district on our website at http://www.crestwoodschools.org/administrativeDepartment.aspx?aid=11.

Among other various upgrades and installs, our technology staff added three new Chromebook Carts to the Intermediate School and added a cart of touch-screen flip Chromebooks to the primary school. At the high school, two PC computer labs were upgraded, the computers were replaced in the art classroom, 60 new wireless access points were installed, and a new STEM lab has been created.

Some other exciting news is that our Primary school is being recognized as a model for its Positive Intervention Support Program (https://www.pbis.org/) by receiving a gold medal award from the Ohio Department of Education. Our primary school counselor, Nikki Johansen, will be introducing our new therapy dog, Clark Kent, to our students. Our Intermediate School Principal, Michelle Gerbrick, reached out to various organizations, and received donations to create various STEM labs for the students at our Intermediate School.  These labs will include 3D printing, a drone, and a mini streaming studio, among other STEM equipment.  Our Middle School is embarking on a researched based, personalized learning platform in 6th grade that will enhance our teachers’ abilities to individualize instruction and for our students to work at their own pace.  (https://youtu.be/oKgzIk3RRnU).

Please remember that we have instituted some new policies this school year.  The first being that we are now a tobacco free campus.  No tobacco products are permitted anywhere on school property.    Please remember this when you attend any of our events at school.    For information on quitting smoking, please visit the following website.  http://www.odh.ohio.gov/tobacco

Second, the Crestwood Board of Education, has adopted a drug and alcohol testing program for students in non-academic activities.   The Crestwood Local School District Board of Education recognizes that the misuse of drugs is a serious problem with legal, physical, and social implications for the whole school community.  The Board takes its responsibilities regarding this problem seriously and is determined to be proactive regarding the use of drugs and/or alcohol by District students.

The Board acknowledges that participating in extracurricular activities and taking responsibility for transportation to and from school are important markers in student's educational experience and personal growth.  Nevertheless, the Board recognizes that participation in non-academic activities is a privilege that carries with it the responsibility for the safety of the entire Crestwood Local Schools community.  This program shall apply to all Crestwood middle and high school students, or any student attending other schools directly affiliated with Crestwood Local Schools, who participate in school sponsored athletics or other extracurricular activities and to eligible students who wish to obtain a parking permit.

This drug and alcohol testing program has been established to provide a means of deterrence to develop a truly drug-free school environment and to assist students in getting help when needed.  The purpose of the program is:

A.        Provide for the health and safety of all students;

B.         Undermine the effects of peer pressure by providing a legitimate reason for students to refuse to use alcohol and illegal drugs; and

C.        Encourage students who use alcohol and illegal drugs to participate in a treatment                  program.

The Superintendent shall establish procedures and guidelines regarding implementation of this policy that are consistent with its stated purpose.

Here is some financial information in regards to the school district.  The district has avoided deficit spending for the last four years and has only received an increase in operating money twice in the last 25 years.  We will continue to try not to deficit spend, but it will be challenging due to the fact that the State of Ohio has cut our state funds by $273,000 in each of the next two years and operating costs continue to rise.  Below are the tax rates in the various school districts throughout Portage County for a comparison.You can find any school district expenditure on the Ohio Checkbook website.  Crestwood’s information can be found here: https://crestwoodschools.ohiocheckbook.com/transparency#/2926/query=28D5F3387ADB893A129FCD75BAB4A918.  Financial information can also be found on the district webpage under the treasurer's department.  There you can find our 5 year financial forecast and assumptions as well as monthly budget versus actual expenditure reports.  ttp://www.crestwoodschools.org/administrativeDepartment.aspx?aid=3
